Children are abandoned almost every week at the hospital just down the road from where Living Hope Church meets. We hope to open a baby cottage for these children – a place where they can be nurtured and well cared for by a combination of well-trained staff and lay volunteers from Living Hope Church, until each child can be placed in a solid, loving Christian home. We hope to open the Muphamuzi Home before the end of 2011.

“Muphamuzi” means “give me a home”. It is also the name of a previously abandoned baby boy who now has a home: Josh and Marda Mack brought “Muzi” into their family in November 2007. Our dream is to see many abandoned babies provided with loving homes, just like Muzi.

God has provided for this vision in incredible ways! All $115,000 we needed to raise came in, and 1Hope bought the house that will serve as Muphamuzi Home in October 2011. We’re currently raising funds to renovate and touch up the property, and to furnish the home.

South Africa’s Rainfall

We’ll be based in Pretoria, where hot Summer days are regularly interrupted by short and intense afternoon or evening thunderstorms. Lightning occurs with these storms frequently, and occasionally they also bring hail. Summer temperatures range from  61°F (16°C) at night to 86°F (30°C) during the day, with an average high of about 82°F (28°C). Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging between 41°F (5°C) and  68°F (20°C). The coldest part of Pretoria’s winter, in which frost forms most nights, lasts about 6 weeks in July/ August.

• Caring for the desperately needy according to biblical principles (James 1:27; Luke 10:25-37). Christians are called to love mercy and live merciful lives. We seek to be obedient to God’s call to be merciful, guided by what His Word has to say about how we should do so.
• Furthering the gospel (Romans 1:16; Mark 8:36). The greatest mercy we can ever offer someone – both for this life and the next – is gospel truth. As we meet practical needs we are purposeful to evangelize and disciple those we minister to.
• Equipping and mobilizing local churches to obey Christ’s command to love their neighbors as themselves (church strengthening) (Matthew 28:18-20; Titus 2:11-14). We want to help local churches encourage and equip their people to love their neighbors sacrificially and with biblical wisdom, and provide these local churches with resources and workable opportunities to help cultivate such living amongst their people.
