About Us

Donovan was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. Heather was born in Bellevue, Washington, but she grew up in Leon, Spain from 8 years old (her parents are missionaries in Spain).

We met at Bethel Grace Baptist Church, in Bellflower, California. Donovan had come to America to study at The Master’s College (B.A. Biblical Studies, 2004), and became a youth pastor at Bethel Grace in January 2006. Heather began attending Bethel Grace when she returned to the U.S. to be a student at Biola University (B.A. Liberal Studies – Elementary Education, 2007). She became the Children’s Ministry Director at Bethel Grace after she graduated. We were already good friends at that point, and after serving together on ministry staff for a few months, things became pretty clear! :) We were married in June 2008.

One of Donovan’s former professors encouraged him to talk to Josh Mack in early 2009: God had given us a heart for supporting church plants and for gospel-centred orphan ministry, and Donovan was burdened for his home country. The Macks were passionate about these very things, and were already ministering in South Africa… The Macks invited us to join them in ministry, and Bethel Grace committed to sending us out as missionaries. Not long afterwards (towards the end of 2009), the Macks launched 1Hope4Africa and Josh began leading a team to plant Living Hope Church. It took us a couple years to raise our ministry support. We arrived in Pretoria to join these ministries on 30 May, 2012.

We have 4 children: Themba (born 24 November 2010, been in the care of our family since 14 November 2012), Eliya (born 8 December 2011), Jensen (born 14 March, 2015), and Rene (born 2 January, 2016, been in the care of our family since November 2016).
